THINK ABOUT IT

Seventh in a series of newsletters by former Local 150 Financial Secretary Ray Connors

 I WAS THERE

I have tried to just ignore Bill Dugan and his slate’s attacks about what they call Joe’s land deal.  I know that when a man has done nothing wrong, he does not have to lower himself to the level of those who attack his principles and integrity by publicly dignifying them with a response.  I know, also, that Joe Ward and Team 150 are trying to run their campaign on that principle.  But, over and over the UEP has lied about this and I just won’t stay silent about it any longer. I know the truth because I was there

I don’t possess the advanced level of memory that Bill Dugan claims that he has suddenly acquired concerning the minute details of who said what, and who did this and who did that, and when they did it, and what happened then, and so on, about something that happened 12 years ago.  This instant memory is a rather miraculous occurrence though, since those of you who have recently attended any district union meeting where Bill Dugan did finally manage to show up, know that he has been a little confused and at those meetings just couldn’t remember much about anything.

Actually, I would be hard pressed to even recall the year that this so-called “event” occurred.   I do remember exactly, though, what Bill Dugan said when he was told the price of that piece of property.  He said that it was too expensive, he would not spend that much money for it, and he didn’t want it.  And he never made an offer to purchase it, or brought up the subject again, not once in 12 years.  That piece of property and anything that happened to it after he refused to purchase it has nothing to do with Bill Dugan or Local 150, ethically or legally.  And that, members, is the simple truth.

I am really sick and tired of hearing Jim Sweeney lie and act as Bill Dugan’s mouthpiece on this; he wasn’t even there!  It seems that every “comment” that has been made by the UEP about this, as well as every other statement that has been made about anything during this election, comes from Jim Sweeney or from their attorneys.  According to their own literature, (and I use this term loosely) Jim Sweeney has been designated as Bill Dugan’s official spokesman.  Dugan, it seems, has become a mute. It’s pretty pathetic when a man won’t, or can’t, speak for himself!  Just who is the leader of this party anyway?

And when it comes to those Local 150 bought and paid for attorneys, how they try to intimidate us with their rhetoric!  They go on and on about “reports show” (reports they themselves report) and “suggestions were made” (suggestions that they themselves suggest) and “for immediate release”, (articles that they themselves release) and  “depositions were taken” (questions that they themselves ask their own clients) and “allegations were made” (allegations that they themselves make).  It’s nothing more than fancy-sounding “legalese” used in an attempt to try to confuse the membership.  Don’t let all this “legal” mumbo jumbo fool you or cloud your thoughts.

I’m not a legal expert, but I’ve been involved in enough legal proceedings over the years to know that endless motions and continuances will delay any lawsuit against Joe until way past our election.  And I predict that after the election, if not before, this trumped up lawsuit will just disappear.  But in the meantime, the United Engineers Party will continue to bombard the members with continuous allegations against Joe, costing Local 150 (that means you) untold amounts of money on attorneys whose job is to try to distract you from the real issues that impact your future.
